|

Can I use the word 'acknowledged' in the sentences below?
- There are more successful businessmen than successful businesswomen. The number of the ACKNOWLEDGED female will increase by improving child care support system.
In the second sentence, I wanted to avoid to use the same phrase 'successful women' because they were already used before.
However, what I wanted to express was;
- The number of the successful businesswomen will increase......
Could you let me know whether the word 'acknowledge' means what I wanted to mean?
Thank you. _________________ YUKIKO

"Acknowledged" means recognized, accepted, or admitted. I don't think I would use it instead of repeating "successful."
If you want to avoid repetition, try: "The number of women should increase with greater availability of child care." _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

It works if you are more worried about writing convention than clarity. But then you lose your focus, which is successful businesswomen.
There is little harm - and much good - in repeating a word when it clarifies or emphasizes your point.
There is more harm done by leaving an important word out just to meet the non-repetition convention (it's not a rule).
When given a choice between; (a.) meeting a writing convention, and (b.) precise communication...
...be precise.
convention: S: (n) convention, normal, pattern, rule, formula (something regarded as a normative example) _________________ Daniel
