I have been learning a lot about Chinese culture. I have created a blog on a Chinese web site. I share my America culture and discuss the similarities, or differences between the cultures. It is a very nice page to visit, and no one is rude. It is for Chinese who wish to learn more about American culture, not many Americans see my blog. 2 weeks old and the blog has had 1500 visitors. Read at the bottom of my posts for the web site. _________________ Visit my Blog on a Chinese web site. I discuss many things about American culture, and the site is getting quite popular. http://mallaien.blog.sohu.com/ |

I have a few questions to ask:
one:Do most Chinese know that Chinese government blocks many oversea media websites which they consider them as political sensitive to their ruling?
Two:Do most Chinese think what the government is blocking many oversea media website is infringing to the rights of their knowing ?
Three:Why doesn't Chinese government allow ordinary people in China to install satellite TV receivers?
Four:Do most Chinese know that Chinese government censors and filters many contents when they use Google and other search engines to find information?
Five:What do you think of why Chinese government is doing these things above?
Six:Do most Chinese still believe communism ideology now? |

I don't know whether other Chinese people know about that, but at least I know.

I know. and I hope that someday the situation can get better. but now, if I need to know something that our government dosen't want us to know, I would ask my foreign friends to do a google search, and then send the information to me by email. after all, we all should thank internet! internet is so fast and so wide that nothing can be covered well!

I guess they worry that people would know more information that government dosen't want us to know.

Yes. tell you a funny thing. last year, I talked to a friend by MSN. I told her:"here in south China, there is a delicious fruit, named LiChi, you can do a google search to find how it looks!"
then both of me and the friend did a google search. on my google page, I found nothing except lichi, but the friend told me:"Rose, I just did a google search, one of these pictures is a huge pe*nis!!" I said:"how come! we did the search at the same time, I didn't find pe*nis!" she said:"hold on, I am gonna send you my screen picture." and she did!! God! there it was!! actually, I didn't see what's wrong with that pe*nis

For example they block pornografical sites so my friends were very disappointed I couldn't show it to them. _________________ If I say "I love you" to someone, then I also have to say "I also love everyone else inside you, I love the whole world because of you, I also love myself inside you." -- Erich Fromm, the Art of Love |

I don't think that many people in China believe in Communism. The rampant capitalism here almost makes America look Communist!!! The dominant ideology in China is nationalism.
Getting a satellite dish isn't a problem here, but some stations are blocked (or more often temporarily blocked when some 'sensitive' news comes on). The BBC is the most widely blocked, mainly because it insists on giving equal weight to pro and anti independence sources when discussing Taiwan.
The Chinese government blocks more websites than any other and has 50,000 people whose job it is to check online content. However, you can get to most blocked sites (e.g. BBC) indirectly. |

Thanks redrose and ad-miral for answering my questions.
I heard that some kinds of person in China are allowed to install satellite TV recerivers ,they are certain-rank governmetal officals say vice-mayors or vice-director generals, foreigners who reside in China and some people who have studied abroad and got foreign degrees.
A few years ago, there was a ourbreak of SARS in China,Chinese government originally denied that China had that ourbreak, but a military -retired doctor known as Jiang -so-so (sorry I don't remember his name)posted his statement in Internet which he told ordinary Chinese and the world that the minister of health department of China was lying to the world, there ware many SARS patients in his hospital which the government refused to admit. This accident made the world outrage toward china for its hiding the news of burst-out of SARS,the Chinese government gave the world bad impression :Chinese government is not only irresponsible for all Chinese people ,but also irresponsible for the world.Afterward, the minister of national health department was fired by the Chinese top leaders as scapegoat.
There was another instance in which Chinese government doesn't care for their people ,about one year ago there was a blast of chemical factory in North-east China which a large amount of poisonous chemicals pollluted a river which supplies water to many cities along the river ,the river also crosses into Russia.Initially Chinese government coverd the pollution ,they told ordinary people that water-supply factory needed repair for a few day so that there was no water for the residents, they dishonorably lied to the public that the river wasn't severely polluted by poisonous chemicals, afterward a vice-mayor commited suicide as scapegoat.
These are only two examples how Chinese government covers break news for its own interests which they don't want ordinary Chnese people and the world to know what exactly happen in China.
so the freedom of press in China is very important for China to become a responsible nation in the international affairs, but now China don't have the freedom of press, hoping China will have freedom of press in the near future.
Good luck,China!

Oh yeah, freedom of the press is severely limited in China. Chinese people are not used to going online and looking at alternative news sources from outside China (nationalism, again!).
The Chinese government does lie - much more than Western governments - but, as ltp pointed out, the worst thing is that they try to cover everything up and deny things, even though everyone knows those things are happening - SARS was a perfect example.
The Chinese government says it is reforming its ways, but it isn't. It's all just lip service.
The SARS outbreak was very important in another (often overlooked) way. China constantly says that it seeks international co-operation. The fact that China didn't report SARS to the international community suggests otherwise. |
