here is a question from a textbook.

In the suburbs there is a rocky hill, (castle, stands, the, top, ancient, of, on, which, whose, an).

the answer is "..., on the top of which an ancient castle stands."
but the sentence sounds weird to me.
can you say "an ancient castle stands on the top of which"??

No, but you could say:
In the suburbs there is a rocky hill, on which an ancient castle stands. or
In the suburbs there is a rocky hill, on which stands an ancient castle. or
In the suburbs there is an ancient castle which stands on a rocky hill. (A more common construction in my opinion, but not as poetic.)
