Body-surfing in on my last wave, I suddenly felt as if someone had whacked my leg with a lead pipe studded with nails.
what does 'body-surfing in' modify?
what do we call it?
Is prepositional phrase 'with a lead pipe studded with nails' modified 'leg'?
what do we call it?
Thank you |

.
Body-surfing...wave is a nonfinite clause acting as an sentence adverb.
With a lead...nails is a prepositional phrase acting as an adverb modifying whacked.
