Hello,

If someone were to ask me, "What's this?", then which of the following would be a acceptable when talking about chewing gum:

1- It's a gum.
2- It's gum.
3- It's a piece of gum.
4- It's a stick of gum.

Is there something else that would be better?

Thank you in advance for your help.

all are correct. but if you want the answer that fits the meter of your question.. then it will be " it's gum"..
just see"what's this? " have two words just like "it's gum".
but i say again that all are EQUALLY correct!

Sorry to disagree, but "It's a gum" is not what a native speaker would say to identify a stick of gum, a wad of gum, a piece of gum, or just gum.

2, 3, and 4 are perfectly good answers.

CP, you would be right on that one.
i talked to some of my british friends and they all agree that they never heard any native people saying "it's a gum"
thanks for the correction
