| For years men studying maps of the earth have noticed that the continents can be put together like parts of a giant puzzle. Even school children have wondered if the continents might have been joined together at some time in the earth's history. Yet most scientists in the past refused to accept the idea that the earth's land masses had broken up and drifted apart - a theory known as "continental drift." |
What does the bold sentence mean? It means 'Even schoolchildren have thought that the continents might have been joined together at some time in the earth's history.'? If so, can 'wonder' mean 'think'? As I know, 'wonder' means 'doubt about' not 'think'. I wonder. Can you clear my doubts?
Thanks. |

I wonder if the continents were once joined together = I ask myself / am curious about / question whether the continents were once joined together.
The children saw the big puzzle pieces that are the continents on a map, thought about them / asked themselves / questioned whether they might have once been joined together, yet grown-up scientists resisted the obvious conclusion for a long time. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
