Hi, everyone!

When I was reading a book on education, I came across this expression:

"place a napkin in your lap".

I wonder why "in" is used here. "On" would sound much more logical to me.

I'd appreciate your opinion on this.

Hi Yoshi-Pooh,

I agree with you that "on" sounds more logical. I would use "on" myself but if you think of the napkin as being partly enclosed (on two sides, by the legs and torso) you might be able to see how "in" would be considered acceptable as well.
