|
|
I found the following pronunciation that my English teacher teached were a bit different with the pronunciation that native English speaker sounded.
discuss -for 'c' behind 's' , my teacher sound 'k' as for 'key', but I feel that most of native English speakers sound 'g' as for 'go', the same questions for the words-excuse, discover, and so on.
mistake- for 't' behind 's', it should sound 't' as for 'tea' ? OR it should sound 'd' as for 'day' ? , the same question for words ' western ', 'Mister' and so on.
transport - for 'p' behind 's', it should sound 'p' as for 'pen'? OR it should sound 'b' as for 'bed', the same question for words 'express', 'passport' , 'sport' and so on.
Please can you let me know which pronunciation are correct ? Thank you for your help. |

discuss - the c should be pronounced as the k in key.
mistake - the t should be pronounced as the t in tea.
transport - the p should be pronounced as the p in pen.
Unfortunately many people, if not most, are careless in their pronunciation with the result that the sounds are degraded to match your other examples.
However, you will always be correct if you pronounce them as above. |

The problem is that /p/, /t/, and /k/ in their initial form are aspirated; that is, we make a "puff of air". If /p/, /t/, and /k/ are in the position you describe, after an "s" for example, there is no aspiration. These are the /p/, /t/, and /k/ sounds that are used in many other languages. They are not the same as a /b/, /d/, or /g/ sound, but there are similarities. With respect to your examples, in my speech I pronounce all of them unaspirated except for passport, where I aspirate both /p/ sounds. |
