Hello,
I came across this sentence in an online newspaper. Why is there no "the" before "police"? I have seen examples of "police" without "the" before and assumed it was a typo. But now, I'm not so sure...
"Police mostly discount speculation of a "copycat" crime, inspired by last week's school shooting in Colorado..."
Thank you,

It is optional, as it often is with plural nouns:
(The) police are on the lookout for a masked man.
(The) chances are good that they will catch him.
(The) Japanese are great baseball fans.
