Is it possible to say:
This was the same tune as I played before.
OR would I have to write:
This is the same tune that I played before.

Both are fine. As + comparative clause is often replaced by a relative clause (fide Huddleston & Pullum):
We're going to the same hotel as we stayed at last year.
We're going to the same hotel that we stayed at last year.
