For how could the fear, the hatred, and the lunatic credulity which the Party needed in its members be kept at the right pitch except by bottling down some powerful instinct and using it as a driving force.
Would you explain the bold text?

1. "Kept at the right pitch" refers to the level of intensity of the fear, hatred, and lunatic credulity. How could they be kept at the right intensity except for doing something?
2. "Bottling down" means suppressing or holding down -- in this case, suppressing some instinct. More common is the expression to bottle up some emotion or feeling, as though putting it in a bottle and stuffing in a cork to keep it from escaping.
3. "Using it as a driving force" means using the bottled up instinct and using it as a force to keep the fear, hatred, and lunatic credulity at the right level or pitch. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
