on the walk from the station the May sunshine had made him feel dirty andetiolated, a creature of indoors, with the sooty dust of London in the pores of his skin.

Would you explain the bold text?

Thank you

When in doubt, check the dictionary. From www.yourdictionary.com:

(Pronunciation Key)etiolate Listen: [ t--lt ]
v. etiolated, etiolating, etiolates
v. tr.

Botany To cause (a plant) to develop without chlorophyll by preventing exposure to sunlight.

a. To cause to appear pale and sickly: a face that was etiolated from years in prison. b. To make weak by stunting the growth or development of.
v. intr. Botany

To become blanched or whitened, as when grown without sunlight.

- - -

So the writer's walk made him feel pale and sickly, bleached out like a plant kept indoors too long, and dirty from the sooty air. (Soot is the black stuff in the air caused by burning coal or oil.)
