Hi All,
I hear people using phrases like the few given below.
"I am Ruth Black up here in Boston"
"Down there in Florida, winters are not so bad"
Can anybody please explain me how to use up and down correctly?
Thanks,
MG |

Because maps are always oriented with north at the top, people tend to say "up" for northern regions and "down" for southern.
You go up to San Francisco or down to L.A. or San Diego. People live down in the South, or even the deep South, or come from up North.
Boston is in Massachusetts, pretty far up the eastern seaboard, while Florida is the southernmost state, a big thumb down in the lower right corner of the country. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
