Would you explain the structure of the sentence below. I do not understand the part of "Out went the village and in went a round."

Out went the village and in went a round, triple-walled government compound more than 3,000 yards (2,750 meters) in diameter.

I take it to mean that the village was destroyed and replaced by a government compound 2750 meters in diameter, which was round and had three walls around it.

Hello hiromichi,

The sentence you provided does not stop at the word "round". The words "round, and tripple-walled" are adjectives to the "government compound" in the sentence. The comma is not separating the sentence in two, instead, it is seperating the two adjectives used to describe the "government compound." The word "round" has no independent meaning within the sentence. Have a nice day!
