Could you explain what he is doing?

"He is making the sign with his first two fingers straight and the rest of your hand making a fist."

We have two pictures.

1. V sign
2. thumb and forefinger are raised while the remaining fingers are clenched

It would be the V sign. Although the thumb is actually the first finger, people in the U.S. typically call the index finger the first, the middle finger the second, etc., with the thumb given its own name. So the first two fingers would make the V sign.
