Please help;

The boys were playing up in the trees like ( ) many monkies.

This should mean "as if they were monkies".

What should I put in the blank??

Thanks very much.

"The boys were playing in the trees like so many monkeys." [Note spelling.]

The "so many" functions as a way to say that the number of the latter category (here, monkeys) is the same as the number of the former category (here, boys). If there were seven boys, they were playing in the trees like seven monkeys.
