Dear teachers,

Is it correct to say:

On arriving at the station there was a long queue in front of the ticket office.

In casual conversation, no one would have a problem understanding you if you said that. In careful writing, you would probably want to change it:

On arriving at the station, I saw that there was a long queue in front of the ticket office.

On my arrival at the station, I found a long queue in front of the ticket office.

(In American English, substitute "line" for "queue.")
