Even after enormous upheavals and seemingly irrevocable changes, the same pattern has always reasserted itself, just as a gyroscopel will always return to equilibrium, however far it is pushed one way or the other.

Would you explain the bold text?

Than you

Gosh, this is complicated stuff!

I think a gyroscope is a kind spinning top (except more scientific Wink ). It is very stable, and because of the physics that goes into it, it will not fall over easily.
This sentence says the gyroscope (top) will always return to the equilibrium (sort of balance, or center), however far it is pushed one way or the other. This means that the gyroscope/top will always stay straight up and balanced, even if you try to knock it over.

Here, this stable top is being compared to the pattern. (The pattern always reasserts itself even after changes, and the top always keeps spinning and balancing, even after being pushed).
