Yes. Figuratively, when someone is promoted higher and higher in an organization, he or she rises up as though going to higher and higher floors in a building ... all the way to the ceiling of the top floor.
But imagine that somewhere below the top floor, there is a glass ceiling that stops some people from rising higher. They can see the higher floors, but they can't get to them. It looks as though they can keep rising, but in reality they can't.
Why? Because they are women, not men, and the people in power don't believe women are qualified to do the highest-level jobs. Or because they are the wrong color or ethnicity, and the people in power don't like or trust people from those groups, so they never promote them to the highest positions.
A lot of women believe they can never get above a certain point in an organization because of the glass ceiling, and usually if all you heard was "glass ceiling," you could guess the story in general. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
