"More intelligent rich men work nearly as hard as if they were poor."
1. In this sentence, what's the role or meaning of "as" in "as hard"?
2. In my opinion, the above sentence is similar to "Go as fast as you can."
It looks like "as" is omitted from "as hard as as if they were poor" because "as as if" looks awakard. What's your opinion? |

"As" is an adverb that introduces the comparison.
