Dear all,
Are all the sentences below correct? If so, which one are you most likely to use?
When I was my son's age, I was just the same height as he.
When I was my son's age, I was just the same height as him.
When I was my son's age, I was just the same height as he is.
Thank you.

Here is the rule I used to solve this problem: a pronoun used as the object of a preposition must take the objective form (me, him, her, you, them).
"as advective as" functions as a preposition, so it must be followed by "him" or by a noun phrase, "he is".
So, the second and third sentences are correct.
However, I think I would be most likely to avoid the whole mess and say, "When I was my son's age, I was just the same height." The listener (or reader) should be able to guess the rest from context. _________________ Warning: I have a dictionary and I'm not afraid to use it! |
