Sorry if this question has been asked before.

Does anyone know why we say "remote control", but "air conditioner"?
Why isn't it "remote controller"?

I suppose, it's idiosyncratic.

One who writes is a writer. Editor, dealer, driver, actor, teacher and so on.
But one who cooks is a cook (not cooker).
One who gives coaching is a coach (not coacher).
