Hi, teachers.
World stocks will rise further as they follow earnings gains.
What does "earnings gains" mean?
Does "follow" mean pursue/seek in this sentense?
Please help me, thank you.
With regards. |

.
Earnings gains sounds a little odd in an investment context because both words have specific and different meanings. I suppose that the writer is using gains in its more general meaning, and that earnings gains simply means increased earnings (= more money made by the companies). When earnings increase, the value of the company then increases, and the price of its stock shares therefore increases: in that sense, a rise in stock price follows gains in earnings.
