Hello, teachers!!
The world was simply choked with matches, and it was almost a duty to go on striking them to make room for the rest.
--->
Do the word "matches" mean "an easily ignited cord or wick"? in this sentence?
Also, I don't understand what this sentence mean. Why do you have to keep striking matches?
Thank you in advance. |

.
More context, please. As it stands, we have an inscrutable world overloaded with a plethora of easily ignited sticks of wood or cardboard.
