Are both in the parentheses in the following sentence correct ?

He is (preparing/preparing for) a speech. |

You can use either, but there is a difference in meaning.

| He is preparing a speech. |
Prepare + direct object = make something ready for use
| Quote: |
| He is preparing (himself) for a speech. |
Prepare + direct object + for = make oneself or someone ready for something
