He that wants hope is the poorest man alive.

I think that "He that wants hope" is good because he is promising. Why is such a person "the poorest"? I don't understand what the sentence means.
Would you tell me what this sentence wants to say?

want generally means desire.
There is another meaning: to want something is to lack something that is necessary. It is with this meaning that want is used in your sentence.
He that wants hope = he that lacks hope.
Hope is what keeps people going, so he who lacks hope is the poorest man according to the adage. |
