I want courage.

When you English native speakers hear "I want courage," do you interpret "I lack courage"? Are there any possibility of "I want to have courage"? Is the only interpretation "I lack courage"?

To want means both to lack and to wish to have. Of course, if one wants courage, one must lack it and may wish to have it or not wish to have it. So your sentence could be interpreted two ways.
