Hello, teachers!!
English poetry, with all its failings, represents the Greek spirit expanded and, if partly clouded in the process, reinforced. French poetry is quintessential, a refinement of the refined; a model of method, it is comparatively insignificant in substance, because it has sacrificed truth to perfection and to reason life.

Why did the writer use "it has sacrificed truth to perfection and to reason life" instead of "it has sacrificed truth to perfection and life to reason"?

Reason, here, is a verb: it means, to express in logical or argumentative form
So the author means, they (the French) have sacrificed truth to perfection in the structure of the poetry so that they can express their arguments about life and its meaning.
Personally, I think it could have been written in much clearer English. |
