Dear teachers,
Can I say:
In my opinion it is essential to have a friend. That is a person very close to me, a kind of companion who accompanies me for a certain time in my life.
Thank you very much in advance for your help.[/b] |

You can use that to refer to a person.
Who's that? That's Mary. She's my friend.
That's the man who stole my purse.
What's a clown. That's someone who makes people laugh.
You can also use "it" for people when their identity is not clear or has not been established like when answering the door or the phone:
Who is it?
It's me. _________________ I'm never going to learn if you don't correct my mistakes! |

Thank you!
The clown example helps a lot.
Best wishes
