Which sounds better? Are these both OK or different in meaning?
A. Before talking with him, I didn't know a whale is a mammal.
B. Before talking to him, I didn't know a whale is a mammal.

If you're English, you say, talk to
If you're American you say, talk with |

Hmm. You mean I have to be English now? I always use "talk to" and I never use "talk with". |

Wow! I love this forum! We can see Canadians, Americans and British discussing the most interesting issues about the English language...
Are there any Australians and South Africans? _________________ Stormy Weather. |

It was one of the first things I noticed that was different about Americans when I first went to the USA for the first time, but, obviously, as with all generalisations, there are exceptions.
I've never heard a native born Englishman use, "talk with", but doubtles there are a few who do. |

If I am not mistaken, most Americans use "talking with" to mean "discussing with" or "speaking with" or "conversing with," while "talking to" is more like "addressing" or "announcing to." _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

Well, at least, that's what teachers tell us at English courses in Brazil. _________________ Stormy Weather. |
