Could anyone explain this?
How do you determine the difference between "interrogative pronoun" and "relative pronoun"?
ex: I cannot guess what he was attempting. |

In my earlier post, I said that what could be an interrogative pronoun or a relative pronoun meaning 'the thing which'. I was wrong: what is a relative pronoun in the quoted sentence.

Interrogative pronouns are used in direct and indirect questions as in:
1. Direct question: 'Who is he?' (Who is an interrogative pronoun.)
2. Indirect question: She asked who he was. (Who is an interrogative pronoun.) _________________ Mary W. Ng
