I have two questions on the following sentence.
1 Is "the purging fear and pity from the soul" correct? I think it should be " the purging of fear and pity from the soul."
2 Is "or representing" correct ? I think it should be " or by representing"
---- the following -------------
In the Aristotelian tradition, dramatic performances evoked the purging fear and pity from the soul either by portraying the downfall of better than average humans from an elevated position to bad fortune, or representing average people who were raised to better standards --- |

It is correct without "of" because it means that the emotions, fear and pity, which are evoked by the performances, are purging (cleansing) for the soul -- or at least that's what they believed.
As for "by," I think it should be there for parallelism. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
