After 20 years on the couch, Richard is finally giving up therapy.
How can finally give up be used in the progressive aspect? Isn't that semantically odd?

He had been thinking about stopping, quitting, giving up the sessions and he finally decided to do it.
I have been thinking of buying a house for a long time.
Today I have decided to do it.
I am finally buying (going to buy) a house.
