Quote:
1.For nation to be great it need not necessarily be big, though bigness is often confounded with greatness.
2.confound right and wrong
3.confound means with end
4.He momentarily confounded his critics by his cool handling of the Gulf crisis.
5.The sudden rise in share prices has confounded economists.

#4 and #5 are found in my English dictionary, so from them I can guess that the meaning of 'confound' is similar to that of 'confuse'.
By the way, I happened to see #1, #2, and #3 in a book. Are #1, #2, and #3 correct? If so, what do they mean each?

Thanks.

Confound and confuse are similar in meaning. When two things are confounded, they are twisted together or inextricably interwoven, so they are difficult to tease apart. Scientists sometimes have to deal with confounded variables, like size and strength. When two things are confused, they are fused together, taken to be the same, or confounded.

A person confronted with any confounded / confused things may be confounded or confused of flummoxed by them.

So all five sentences / fragments are correct.
