Dear teachers,
The following sentence is a part of a pops conductor's interview.
| Quote: |
Kunzel's goal always is to entertain. ''The audience deserves it, they want it, they expect it.''
A natural onstage himself, he is always ready with a quip or a quick ''save,'' if necessary.
''You've got to know what you're doing. If things go wrong, the scenery falls down or something,
you're prepared. The only time I get nervous is if the soloist doesn't know what they're doing.'' |
In this sentence, I don't understand the meaning of "save". Please help me.
Thanks. |

| Here "save" is a noun. A "save" would be doing something to prevent a very bad situation if something suddenly, thus a "quick save", goes wrong. |

What does the language thus a "quick save" mean? |

Dear Tcom:
"Thus" means "therefore" or "in this way." Mr. 2006 was just explaining why "quick" was attached to "save" in the original quote, after he explained what "save" meant.
In sports, saves are common, whether it is the waterpolo goalie who blocks the ball, saving the team from a goal, or the football player whose shoestring tackle saves the team a touchdown. I suppose the conductor's saves include alerting the inattentive oboist or quieting the errant cellist. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
