Can anyone give me some corrections or suggestions on my essay?
Thank you in advance...
Health or Slimness, that is the question.
A lot of young women today are looking for a new fad diet to work a
miracle on their bodies. A lot of women are attracted to these fad diets
because they tend to cause rapid weight loss. However, these diets usually
depend on reduction in calories, which is a very unhealthy and foolish way
of losing weight. These low-calorie diets should be avoided because they
can cause serious problems like loss of muscles, dehydration, and weight
swings.
First of all, the disadvantage of the low-calorie diets is that they cause
the loss of muscles instead of fat. If people don't exercise at all and just
try to lose weight by consuming a small amount of food, their body looks
for another source of energy, burning muscles instead of fat. The reason
for this is that human body tends to conserve fat rather than muscles.
Moreover, muscles are the faster source of energy to burn. As a result,
some low-calorie dieters experience losing weight by muscle loss, not by
body fat loss. This is why people should be more concerned about lower
body fat than weight loss.
Another problem is dehydration. Rapid weight loss by low-calorie diets is
mainly caused by reducing the amount of fluid in the body. Therefore,
dehydration can occur along with negative effects like constipation, skin and
hair problems, and tiredness.
Finally, low-calorie diets could be dangerous because of weight swings.
When people go on these diets, they are likely to gain weight after a short
period of rapid weight loss. This is because of a defense mechanism by the
body to manage the food shortage by conserving calories. In addition, a
slower process of losing weight even depresses some people into quitting
the diet and overeating. This "yo-yo" dieting is extremely dangerous.
According to a report in New England Journal of Medicine, yo-yo dieters
have a 70% higher risk of dying from heart disease than do people whose
weight stays fairly steady, even if they were overweight.
Medical researchers say that the average adult female requires a
minimum of 2000 calories a day to lead a healthy life. However, a lot of
women are sacrificing their health for a slimmer body. Although
low-calorie dieting can lead to fast weight loss, it entails a great cost:
Their health, the most valuable thing in their life. |

I found this quite interesting and well-written. I've made a few changes, that sound a bit better to me, that's all. |
