Dear Teachers,

1. If talking to him and teaching him about this does not get through to him, then maybe you should tighten your control over him.

- get through to him means make him understand, right? And what does tighten your control over him mean here?

Thanks a lot to Teachers,

Stevenukd

Yes, but in a situation where he is unwilling to believe. It's a situation where you might also say, "How am I going to penetrate his thick skull?" An example could be warning a teenager against smoking, but several of his friends smoke and he can't see any damage it has done to them, or trying to convince your boss that his proposal that he is so enthused about will be a big loser for the company.

"Grip" is used metaphorically to mean "control." It's as if we had the person or situation in our hand. When it starts to get out of control, we tighten our grip to control it better. So it just means to "increase your control over him."
