Except for a few carefully chosen gems - memorable phrase or examples you know will work well - be as spontaneous as possible. Don't rehearse to the point that you find yourself saying exactly the same way each time.

What does the above bold part mean?

Thanks.

Dear Mr. Lee, In the bold area, there is an error: 'phrase' should be plural like 'gems' and 'examples'. Beyond that, you may be confused with the word 'gem'. The primary meaning is a gemstone, like ruby, sapphire, emerald, diamond. They are considered precious, or highly-valued. But the meaning of 'gem' has been expanded to mean anything that is highly-valued. So, the author is saying that, in preparing to give a speech, you should specifically remember words or topics that you are sure will have a positive impact on your speech. These words or topics are then gems, precious. And don't memorize all the other words of your speech. OK? Smile
