Please help me on this.

I almost/nearly got lost on my way back.

Do almost and nearly convey completely the same meaning?
Or is there a subtle difference between the two? Would you please educate me on this.

Thanks so much.

In your sentence the two words have the same meaning. I can't think of an example in which one of the two words would be better or more correct than the other.

I spent close to five minutes checking on this.

I spent nearly five minutes checking on this.

I spent almost five minutes checking on this.
