2. Is there any milk in the fridge?
3. Isn't there some milk in the fridge?
4. Isn't there any milk in the fridge?

1 and 2 have the same meaning. 3 and 4 have the same meaning. In other words, some and any have the same meaning in these sentences
1 and 2 are simply asking if there is (some)(any) milk in the fridge.
3 and 4 are suggesting that there (is) (should be) milk in the fridge and seeks conformation or not.
3 and 4 would most likely be said in response to a suggestion or statement that there is no milk in the house. |
