ROSS: Alright, alright, maybe it'll take my mind off it. Do you promise to buy me a *big foam finger*?

1.What is a big foam finger and what's it used for ?
---------------------------------------------------------
PHOEBE: I remember the day I got my first pay check. There was a cave in in one of the mines, and eight people were killed.

MONICA: Wow, you worked in a mine?

PHOEBE: I worked in a Dairy Queen, why?

2. Why the audience laughed right after Phoebe said that she worked in a Dairy Queen?

Thanks to teachers!

A foam finger is something you can buy at sporting events to show which team you are rooting for. Here are some pictures of "foam fingers".

When Pheobe said she remembered her first paycheck because there was a cave in at the mine, the audience probably thought, like Monica, that she worked in the mine. When she said she worked in a Dairy Queen (a quick food place that sells ice cream) they were surprised. The real reason the audience laughed is because they probably had a laugh track. A laugh track is a tape of people laughing when there isn't really an audience. I didn't think it was that funny.

When they tape these kinds of shows before a studio audience, they encourage the audience to be enthusiastic and involved even if a scene requires multiple takes, so the laughter can sometimes be (and sound) forced. And they are not above mixing in some "good" laughter from other parts of the show to "sweeten" the audience response, either.
