Hi Everybody,

what does 'last mile problems' mean in the following sentence:

We semd the books by post so we don't have any last mile problems like some companies.

last mile = from the nearest distribution point to the customer...

1 mile = 1.6 km.

In your example, "the last mile" is not used to indicate a fixed distance, but rather the "last leg" (segment) in the chain of delivery.

so...if the company sends the book to a distibution point (if they even have one) in your city...there is still an additional step...getting the book to you ("the last mile").

By using the postal service from step one in the delivery process, the book goes directly to you ....eliminating the need for further handling by the sender once in your city ("the last mile").
