I hope that he would win the game.
I hope he would be handsome, and if possible, .....
I hope she would work to improve women`s rights.
================================
I was taught that the verb "hope" must be used with a present tense and followed by "will" with a future meaning.
But I have seen that the verb "hope" is often used with "would" on the Internet.
So I really want to know why and how the verb "hope" is used with "would".
Is the verb "hope" used with "would"?
If so, why and how? |

Code: |
I hoped that he would get well. I hope you get well very soon. |
These are perfectly correct sentences.
Going back to your question, would is a modal used to express your polite attitude.
Code: |
Will you open the door? Would you open the door? |
The latter is more polite than the former.
Code: |
He would win the game. He would be handsome. She would work to improve women's rights. |
These sentences can also be considered the main clause of the conditionals, If + past tense, would + verb.
Code: |
I am sure (or I hope) he would say that I misunderstand him (if I asked him). |

So can't the verb "hope" be used with "would" at all?
[1] I hope that he would win the game.
[2] I hope he would be handsome, and if possible, .....
[3] I hope she would work to improve women`s rights.
Are all this sentences incorrect?
I saw that when someone gave another person an answer, he used "hope" in a present tense with "would"
So I am confused..
If all this sentences are incorrect, why do many people in America use "hope" with "would"? |

You're right. The sentences are not correct; the auxiliary verb should be changed to will.

Hope means "to want and expect something to happen". It doesn't make sense to use hope with the conditional would as the latter is used to show a future event that is unlikely. _________________ Mary W. Ng
