Hello, teachers!!

Matthew 5-3

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
----->
Why is "Blessed are the poor in spirit"? I think that "Blessed are the rich in spirit."
Are there other meaning in the word "poor"?

Thank you in advance.

Why would Jesus want to bless the rich who are already rich enough in spirit?

Poor in spirit doesnt necessarily mean poor in material needs. I believe it means the soul, the immaterial, the moral, religious, emotional or psychological aspect of a person. Only a soulless, morally corrupted, agnostic and emotionally troubled person needs to be blessed.

I must admit Im no Bible scholar. The above represents a very narrow and humble interpretation of mine.
