Quote:
1.During the whole winter she never saw a soul.
2.During the whole winter she has never seen a soul.
3.For the whole winter she never saw a soul.
4.For the whole winter she has never seen a soul.

What is correct and why?

Thanks.

1. is correct.

"During the whole winter" means from the time winter began to the time it ended. This period was in the past, so you can't use the present perfect tense with it.

3. is also grammatically correct, but it means something different.

"For the whole winter" means for the length of the period. You put your emphasis on how long something happened rather than when something happened.
