Hi there!
I need your help for the phonetic transcription of the two following words:
ARE [a:*] and YOUR [jɔ:*]
I put in brakets the phonetic transcription I found in my dictionary.
My English teachers always told me to use the * symbol for sounds ending a long /r/, like the two words above.
The problem is that my linguistics teacher told me that the * symbol is not use in the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). In his opinion, the word ARE sounds like [ɑ:] and YOUR like [jɔ:].
Who knows which one is the correct transcription? Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks in adavance! _________________ .:Festina Lente:. |

IPA suggested the use of the diacritic asterisk (*) as a prefix to indicate a word thats a proper name. This suggestion is not followed. Its not used as a phonetic symbol. We dont use it here.
The IPA transcription for are is /{Cardinal vowel #5}:r/ and your /j{upsilon}r/ where upsilon is a near-close back unrounded vowel, between CV #7 & 8. This is how we usually pronounce are and your in this country.
I believe your a: is the CV #5 (script A), the square is the upsilon and * is the consonant r. Judging from your last transcription, I got a feeling you do not pronounce the end r. Thats fine. We usually do here in N. America. |
