Hello, I'm YUKAKO and this is my first message to this Forum.
Please nice to meet you!
I'm studying to be a translator of movie script.
This is a conversation from a comedy.
A guy named Bud was told by his girlfriend that she was pregnant.
I don't get the meaning of Bud's line, "Do you have to be?"
************************************
Bud: You can't be pregnant?!
Inga: Well, I am.
Bud: Do you have to be?
Inga: I love you, Bud.
************************************
A Full sentence of "Do you have to be?" is "Do you have to be pregnant?"
Then, what is he trying to say?
I guess it might be something like "no way", but I'm not sure.
If you have any idea, please help me. |

Thank you for your reply. I understand what pro-choice means.
Actually, a father of his girl friend is scarely person.
So Bud is afraid of him.
Their conversation continues as follows.
*******************************
Bud: Ah, Sweede's gonna kill me.
Inga: We're just gonna have to get married.
Bud: I know.
******************************
I think in the sentence "Do you have to be?", Bud wants to ask her, "Why did't you take the pill?"
