Hello, teachers.
"It takes a big man to admit he's wrong."
What does this "takes" mean?
Thank you in advance!

Dear Junkomama, Your 'takes' means 'requires', approximately. But, you may ask, what does 'it' refer to? What about 'big'? That's hard to explain. I can try to interpret the whole sentence: 'Only a mature-minded man can admit that he is wrong.' OK? --Eric |

Hello, Eric-san.
Thank you so much for your answer and interpretation!
So, "It" is equal to "to admit he is wrong"?

Dear Junko, Based on your last idea, the original sentence could be rearranged as follows: 'To admit he is wrong takes a big man.' (taking out the 'it') That makes sense. Better than the original. OK? --Eric |
