I understand that "for years" means "for a long time" but I'm not sure how long time it means.
Is it strange to use "for years" in place of "for hundreds of years"?

No, unless you want to specifically narrow the range of years to "hundreds" instead of "dozens" or "millions."
Ther following examples are perfectly acceptable:
For years, dinosaurs have roamed the earth.
For millions of years, dinosaurs have roamed the earth.
For years, Michael Jackson has entertained children to his Neverland Ranch.
For 17 years, Michael Jackson has entertained children to his Neverland Ranch. |
