Hello teachers. Could you tell me if the following sentences have the same meaning?
(1) My brother cannot so much as take the train by himself.
(2) My brother cannot even take the train by himself.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, they mean the same thing. The second sentence is more precise and succinct. |

Why don't write : My brother cannot take the train by himself ??
it seems to me that this way it's more easy |

I think Yukineko just wanted to know if two sentences are semantically equivalent (i.e. so much as = even). asian students are taught English this way when it comes to idiomatic expressions.
I believe the expression "so much as" sounds too heavy for an easy sentence like this. And if two sentences are not really interchangeable or equivalent, maybe the way of teaching per se is wrong. _________________ hi. Comment: I thought that people who visited foreign language forums like this one were actually interested in learning, in this case, English. _________________ I'm never going to learn if you don't correct my mistakes! |

Sorry. I did not make a comment to counterargue your point and I agree corrections should be made, if any. It was just the person before you made a comment, trying to get a sentence easier. And I felt that comment was not answering Yukineko's question.
There are a lot to learn from this website thanks to you guys efforts.
Anyway I am a big fan of thie site and will be back sometime. _________________ hi. I am keen on learning languages and I would be greatful if any of you might answer my questions. cheers. |

Comment: I didn't see that other post. Sorry if I seemed to be attacking you. We both agree that corrections are important. _________________ I'm never going to learn if you don't correct my mistakes! |
